There’s a fun phrase we use in Australia: ‘you beaut’. We like our abbreviations, so it’s a quick way of saying ‘you beauty’, and it’s used when something is just that good. Like Australian native skincare ingredients. These beauties are jam-packed full of beneficial phytochemicals (natural compounds found in plants) and support healthy, happy skin.
“Australian natives are such potent, and powerful ingredients that deserve recognition for their potential,” says OSO Skincare’s co-founder, Arielle Vocale. “These ingredients are unique because of their potency and potential when used on the skin, or for medicinal purposes and nutritional value.”
She notes that these ingredients reflect her Indigenous heritage and their importance to her culture. “Incorporating my Indigenous heritage into our business is very important to me, as I am very proud of who I am and where I have come from.”
OSO Skincare’s co-founder, Will Heffernan, adds, “With Arielle’s heritage and being from Australia myself, we thought why not use these incredible native ingredients that we have in our own country. Creating a business that honours the Australian spirit through these ingredients and our branding was always our intention.”
A shining example of this high-potency power is Kakadu Plum. It’s the world’s richest natural source of vitamin C, containing over 100 times more than oranges. Desert Lime, Snowflower, Lilly Pilly, Bush Mint, and Tasmanian Mountain Pepper Berry also have very high concentrations of vitamin C, providing radiance-boosting benefits that this antioxidant vitamin is famous for.
We also love wonderful wattle seed, which comes from a glorious golden-yellow bush. The seed extract contains gallic acid, which is known to have powerful antioxidant and calming properties. These effects help keep the skin looking smooth, silky, and supple.
We’ll admit Kangaroo Paw and Emu Apple are slightly confusing names, but trust us: they’re fully vegan. Kangaroo Paw naturally contains two amazing acids – ferulic acid which is fabulous for brightening and firming, and linoleic acid, which is excellent for skin barrier resilience. Emu Apple berries, called muntries, boast more antioxidants than blueberries (and if you’re wondering, they taste similar to apples).
Nourishment and refreshment
Loaded with vitamin E and antioxidants, Davidson Plum nourishes the skin while delivering a glow-enhancing effect, similar to an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) exfoliant. Macadamias are not only delicious in white chocolate cookies, but the oil from its seed has incredible moisturising and softening properties. It’s rich in vitamin E and beneficial acids (palmitoleic acid, linoleic acid, and oleic acid) which protect the skin barrier, help retain moisture, and deliver a soothing feeling to the skin. Not bad for a little nut.
The fruit extract of Lemon Aspen is also rich in antioxidants, and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Bush Mint has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which clarify and refresh the skin, while its light but zingy scent stimulates the senses.
